Habitat NYS Announces New CEO

Habitat for Humanity of New York State is excited to announce the appointment of Michael Barrett as the new Chief Executive Officer, effective October 15, 2024. Barrett will succeed Mary Robinson, who led the organization for seven years. Barrett brings a wealth of experience from his extensive career in nonprofit leadership, public service, and policy advocacy. His appointment comes at a pivotal time as the organization continues its mission to expand affordable housing across New York State.

Barrett, a seasoned nonprofit leader, joins Habitat for Humanity of New York State from his recent role as Executive Director of the Adirondack Mountain Club. With experience managing organizations with budgets as large as $57 million and teams of up to 600 people, Barrett is poised to bring his strategic insight and strong leadership to Habitat for Humanity.

“Habitat for Humanity’s mission resonates deeply with me, particularly in its focus on providing secure housing, which I believe is foundational to a stable and healthy life,” Barrett said. “I am honored to take on this role and excited to work alongside the talented staff, volunteers, lawmakers, and community partners that further the incredible work being done across the state. At a time when access to affordable homeownership is more critical than ever, I’m excited for the opportunity to elevate our collective efforts.”

With a career spanning roles as a senior policy advisor for governors in New York and Missouri, Barrett has also been a change agent in the nonprofit sector. In addition to his executive roles, he co-founded an innovative public/private nonprofit partnership to provide legal services to underserved populations; the first of its kind in the United States. His experience working with housing committees and community organizations uniquely positions him to lead Habitat for Humanity of New York State, and its network of affiliates, through their next phase of growth.

“Mary’s leadership has been transformative for Habitat for Humanity, and we are deeply grateful for her years of service,” said Diane Brown, Habitat for Humanity of New York State’s Board Chair. “We are confident that Michael Barrett will continue this important work and lead the organization to new heights. The future looks bright for our organization and our neighbors across New York.”
